The Fast-12 is the first 12-inch full range driver developed by Lii Audio as a true flagship unit. Its purpose is to offer a wide, natural and well-balanced response, extending both the low and high frequencies in a satisfactory way, bringing it very close to the real concept of a full range loudspeaker.
This model has been especially designed to reproduce the human voice, acoustic instruments and natural timbre with great realism. Due to its size and extension capability, the Fast-12 performs especially well in large cabinets, with 150 litres or more being recommended. It can also be very successfully combined with the Lii Audio W-15 woofer in systems where greater bass authority is desired.
Full Range Philosophy
One of the main advantages of a full range driver is that it does not require a crossover. Since the sound comes from a single point, phase distortion associated with multi-way systems is avoided, resulting in a more direct, natural and coherent reproduction.
Lii Audio has carefully tuned its full range drivers to achieve the most balanced sound possible. For this reason, the use of notch filters or aggressive electrical correction is not recommended. According to the brand’s philosophy, these elements may alter the original waveform, introduce coloration and reduce the efficiency of the driver.
The idea is to keep the signal path as pure and simple as possible. Instead of modifying the sound through circuitry, it is preferable to shape the final result through cabinet design, physical adjustment, materials and acoustic integration.
Materials and Construction
The core of the Fast-12 is its paper cone, made from an exclusively developed pulp. Natural plant fibers are added to this pulp, followed by a strengthening treatment, in order to achieve the best possible balance between stiffness, damping and musicality.
The textile surround and elastic suspension components use high-quality materials, including DuPont products. The damping coating applied to the textile surround comes from the Japanese chemical industry and is designed to resist ageing over long periods, with an estimated service life of up to 20 years.
The magnetic circuit uses high-performance permanent ferrite. This type of material retains strong magnetic remanence even after the external magnetizing field disappears, allowing it to generate a stable and constant magnetic field. It also offers excellent thermal stability, with the ability to work at very high temperatures without significant demagnetization.
The dual magnetic structure ensures strong magnetic force and allows the driver to reach a sensitivity of up to 94 dB.
The voice coil uses a Kapton former with aluminium wire. Combined with the double-cone structure, it provides very good resolution and allows the high-frequency response to extend up to approximately 20 kHz, with a roll-off of around 3 dB.
About Technical Parameters
Although parameters and measurement curves can be useful, Lii Audio believes that they do not always explain the true sonic personality of a loudspeaker.
Sensitivity, for example, indicates acoustic pressure efficiency, but it does not define by itself how easy a driver is to control or how well it will respond to an amplifier. Each speaker has its own internal resistance, mechanical behaviour and control requirements.
In the same way, a frequency response curve can provide partial information, but it can hardly reveal how a loudspeaker will truly sound in a real room, inside a specific cabinet and connected to a particular system.
Sound is both a physical and artistic experience. It is born from the vibration of an object, travels through the air and reaches the ear as a complex sensation that cannot be fully reduced to simple numbers. For this reason, while measurements are important, they cannot fully express the texture, naturalness, emotion or musicality of a loudspeaker.
Lii Audio’s development philosophy is always based first on listening. Design, material selection and final adjustments are carried out in search of a satisfying and coherent listening experience. Once the desired sonic result has been achieved, the speaker is measured and verified in an anechoic chamber, but the design is not modified merely to obtain better-looking parameters on paper.
As we often say: paper can hold anything, but music does not lie.
